We offer a variety of appointments and we hope that the information given below will help you book an appointment to suit your health needs.

Please note that we are a surgery involved in the training of medical students and GP Registrars. You will be informed prior to any appointment if students are present in the consultation room. Should you not wish to have them present then please inform the receptionist. GP Registrars are fully qualified doctors who are completing their training in General Practice. Usually they will be with us for two periods of 6 months.

Routine pre-bookable appointments can be booked up to four weeks in advance with the doctor for routine or non-urgent health needs.

Telephone Triage Service/Minor Illness Clinics

We have recently developed care navigation further; we now have a minor illness clinic which is available every week day. Reception will ask you a few questions regarding your problem and if you fit the criteria for the minor illness clinic you will be offered an appointment.  You may  be directed to a more suitable service ie. pharmacy and self care dependingupon the nature of your issue . If you don’t fit criteria for minor illness clinic reception will offer you either the next available appointment or a telephone triage appointment with a GP or Nurse Practitioner.

You will receive a phone call from a GP who will discuss your concerns and assess your needs with you. Some patient’s concerns can be fully addressed over the telephone. Patients who need a face to face appointment in the surgery will be offered an appointment with the appropriate practitioner either on the day (urgent appointment) or next day or in 3 days (semi-urgent appointment) or in some cases a routine (non- urgent appointment) may be appropriate. For some patients it is helpful to arrange some initial tests prior to being seen by the Practitioner.

The practice has processes in place for those people who don’t have access to a phone or who are hard of hearing. Please specify if you can only get to a phone at a certain time and the clinician will make every effort to contact you during that time period.

Pre-Bookable Telephone Appointments

All our doctors offer telephone appointments throughout the day. The GP will try to call you as close to the appointment time as possible.

General advice can be offered or conditions assessed where no physical examination is required.

Some results may also be discussed over the telephone and you will be advised about this by letter.

Home Visits

We offer home visits to our patients who are housebound. Requests for visits should ideally be made before 11.00am. We understand that emergencies may occur later than this, please contact the surgery, as soon as you can so that the request can be passed to the doctor.

A doctor may contact you prior to attendance to assess the situation. In some cases it may be more appropriate for the Community Matron or District Nurse to attend, or for an ambulance to be called. We cannot guarantee a named doctor for home visits.

Should you have difficulty with transport, local taxis will be happy to bring you to the surgery, or perhaps a relative, neighbour or friend can give you a lift.

Late For Your Appointment

Please attend your appointment on time, if you are late you may not be seen and will need to re-arrange your appointment. 


If you require an interpreter to attend with you when you see your Doctor please notify the receptionist prior to booking the appointment and she will arrange this for you.  Please note that we need 7 days notice to arrange an interpreter.

Cancel an Appointment

It is important that you inform the reception staff if you are unable to attend your appointment, this will allow that appointment to be offered to another patient. If you fail to notify the Practice that you are unable to attend, you will be sent a letter informing you that you have defaulted from your appointment. Persistent defaulters maybe removed from the list.


Text Reminder Service

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need inform reception and give your verbal consent. 

Please remember to update your contact details with us when you change address, telephone numbers and email address.

Extended Hours

Our Practice is open one evening a week for doctor appointments.

Star Service – Extended GP Access

You can book your own out of hours appointment - Just click on the star service link- to access one of the local extended GP centres.

GP opening hours have been extended for all GP practices in the South of Tees CCG area.  To improve primary care services outside normal hours, patients can now access the South Tees Access and Response (STAR) Service.

To see or speak to a clinican urgently between 18:30 and 21:30 – Monday to Friday or 08:00 to 20:00 weekends & Bank Holidays please ring 111. During normal hours patients should continue to contact Zetland Medical Practice to make an appointment.
